Lyrics Run My World

I’m sure many people will agree with me when I say that musical lyrics are everywhere. You can relate the type of music a person listens to, to their background and sometimes even beliefs. I find myself quoting songs from every genre, multiple times a day. It is quite sad actually. Depending on the day I’m having, my Facebook or Myspace status will be blown up with song lyrics that relate to me at the time. I feel as though song lyrics help people get out what they want to say. Don’t tell me that you hear a song come on the radio and automatically think of a friend, girl/boyfriend, family member, or even an enemy.

As I write this I can’t help but think of a quote I ran across one day; “I wish you would listen to my favorite songs more closely, because the words they sing are the words I’m too afraid to speak.” -Unknown. I relate lyrics to the “gothic paintings” referred to in Dwight MacDonald’s “Masscult and Midcult”, stating that there are no bad gothic paintings. They are in the eye of the beholder. My addiction to quoting songs will never end. Why? Because as the years go by, new songs will come out and new lyrics will be quoted. Some may find them useless others will find them uplifting. I include lyrics in things such as when I write letters or emails I will end them with lyrics. Even in the future I plan to have multiple tattoos quoting lyrics from some of my favorite songs. Lyrics last forever. Lyrics quote my life.

“I’m in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.” –Alabama I’m in a hurry

  1. I’m a big music kind of person and I truly believe that certain lyrics can define you at the right moments. For decades music has been something more than just noise. Artists create music to convey their emotions and use certain lyrics to express their feelings. Inspirations, motivations and experiences give the lyrics and music the meaning behind it. Whenever any artists are interviewed, they are asked about the meaning behind their songs and what they are supposed to represent.

Here are some of the lyrics to “Underclass Hero” by Sum 41

“Well I won’t be caught living in a dead end job
While praying to my government guns and gods
    Now it’s us against them
    We’re here to represent
To spit right in the face of the establishment.

And now i dont believe (ain’t got no faith in nothing)
Stand on my own (ain’t got no sympathy)
Wasting the youth (while being young and useless)
Speak for yourself (and dont pray for me)

    Well because we’re doing fine
And we don’t need to be told
    That we’re here doing fine
Cause we won’t give you control
And we don’t need anything from you
    Cause we’ll be just fine
And we won’t be bought and sold
    Just like you”

In this song and in the entire album Deryck Whibley is expressing his feeling towards his father. I was at X-Fest in 2007 when Sum 41 was there and he talked about how he never had a father figure and this album shows the hardships that he’s gone through.
