My Avatar… Wanna Date Her?

Ok so being the nerd that I am, I got really excited when I found this video that one of my friends had sent me awhile back. Online gaming has become a large part of many lives. Games such as World of Warcraft and Quake Arena allow gamers to make a character and use this character to interact with others over the internet. There are also Role Playing (RP) websites in which you simply write stories using characters you have made up and share these stories with other users and even reply in other stories as your character. Guilty! I RP… I love making characters and finding/drawing pictures that I can upload for others to actually see my characters as I see them.

BUT some people take it a different way. This way is like an alternate way of life, a different kind of culture. What way is this you say? It has been a major craze to make a avatar online and actually date someone elses avatar. I see this happen all the time in World of Warcraft. Some people will pay actual money so that they can buy virtual rings, clothes, potions… you name it, just to give to their virtual boy/girlfriend or in some other cases virtual wife or husband. This is absolutely amusing to me.

The video below is a comical representation of dating avatars online made by The Guild. As I post this video it may just become another meme. To me is it already a meme because it has already become an inside joke between my friends and I. The video has no point but to poke fun at online dating in the form of avatars.

*There are some sexual references…just thought I would point that out.

  1. Interesting observations. Now, the point of the assignment is to find ways to link your artifacts with ideas and concepts from class. It’s a challenge to you as a writer. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you need to do it in some kind of order; I’m not saying that you need to discuss high culture vs low culture because we did that in class on Thursday. You can always re-visit this post later on, and edit it.
I can also recommend something for you to read, which I think you’ll find pretty interesting. There’s an essay by Chuck Klosterman, called Billy Sim, which appears in his book “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs”. It talks about how people are quite obsessed with simulated reality (like playing the sims), and of his experience with the sims. I think it’s very much along the lines of what you’re saying.

  2. [...] am, even if it is not done perfectly. Blogs can’t be perfect. I think my worst post would be My Avatar…wanna date her? besides a couple of my lasts posts because of my time crunch. My Avatar started off as a really [...]
